SPF Every Day: Why Sunscreen Is the Most Important Step in Your Skincare Routine

If you only do one thing for your skin, make it this: wear SPF every single day. Not just at the beach. Not just in summer. Every day, regardless of the weather, the season, or how long you plan to be outside.

At Le Beauty & Skincare in Brisbane, we say this to every single client — because no treatment we perform will deliver its full potential if you're not protecting your skin from UV exposure between appointments.

Why SPF Is Non-Negotiable in Brisbane

Brisbane sits in one of the highest UV zones in Australia. Queensland's UV index regularly hits extreme on the standard scale — meaning unprotected skin can sustain UV damage in less than 10 minutes of mid-morning exposure.

UV radiation comes in two primary forms: UVB, which causes sunburn and contributes to skin cancer, and UVA, which penetrates more deeply and is the primary driver of photoageing — pigmentation, fine lines, loss of elasticity, and collagen breakdown. UVA is present throughout the year, even on overcast days, and passes through glass.

Sitting by a window at your desk, driving in your car, or stepping outside briefly to grab a coffee is enough to accumulate UV damage if you're unprotected. Over years and decades, this cumulative exposure is responsible for a significant proportion of visible skin ageing.

Mineral vs Chemical SPF: What's the Difference?

Mineral sunscreens — primarily zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — sit on the surface of the skin and physically reflect UV radiation away. They are generally well-tolerated by sensitive and rosacea-prone skin and are photostable (they do not break down in sunlight).

Chemical sunscreens contain organic UV-absorbing compounds that convert UV radiation into heat. They are often lighter in texture, but some formulations can cause sensitivity reactions — particularly for reactive or acne-prone skin.

For most of our clients, we recommend mineral-based SPF, particularly given Brisbane's UV intensity and the prevalence of sensitised skin concerns we see in clinic.

How Much SPF Do You Actually Need?

SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks approximately 98%. For clients managing pigmentation, in post-peel recovery, or with UV-sensitive concerns, SPF 50+ is our recommendation.

More important than the SPF number is how much you apply and how often. Most people apply far less than the amount required to achieve the stated protection. A full teaspoon is required for the face and neck alone. Reapplication every 2 hours during outdoor exposure is recommended.

SPF in your foundation or powder is not sufficient as a standalone protection. It needs to be your dedicated final skincare step, applied after moisturiser and before makeup.

Common SPF Myths — Debunked

"I don't need SPF on cloudy days." — UVA penetrates cloud cover. Overcast weather does not significantly reduce UVA exposure.

"My foundation has SPF 15, so I'm protected." — The quantity of foundation applied is a fraction of what's needed to reach the stated SPF level.

"I'm darker-skinned, so I don't need SPF." — All skin types sustain UV damage. Higher melanin provides some natural protection, but it does not prevent photoageing or skin cancer.

"SPF makes my skin break out." — This can happen with the wrong formulation. There are excellent SPF options for oily, acne-prone, and sensitive skin — finding the right one is worth the effort.

SPF Products We Recommend at Le Beauty

We prescribe Circadia Circa-Shield SPF 30 and Daytime Control for most clients. Circa-Shield is a mineral, zinc oxide-based broad-spectrum SPF with a lightweight finish — excellent for daily use and well-tolerated by sensitive skin.

The best SPF is the one that suits your skin well enough that you'll actually wear it every day. If you'd like guidance on which SPF is right for your skin type, we're happy to advise during any consultation at Le Beauty.

SPF as Anti-Ageing: The Evidence

Research indicates that ultraviolet radiation is responsible for up to 80% of visible facial skin ageing. Wrinkles, pigmentation, loss of firmness, and overall skin quality are all significantly impacted by lifetime UV exposure — far more than any other single factor, including genetics.

The most effective anti-ageing product available is likely already on your bathroom shelf. Use it every day.
