Chemical Peels 101: A Complete Guide to What They Are, Who They're For, and What to Expect
Chemical Peels 101: A Complete Guide to What They Are, Who They're For, and What to Expect
If you've been considering a chemical peel but aren't sure what to expect, you're not alone. Chemical peels are one of the most effective professional skin treatments available — and also one of the most misunderstood. At Le Beauty & Skincare in Brisbane, peels form a significant part of our clinical treatment offering, and we use them to address everything from pigmentation and acne to texture, fine lines, and dullness.
Here's everything you need to know before booking your first peel.
What Is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a professional treatment in which a solution containing one or more active acids is applied to the skin to accelerate cell turnover and promote the shedding of damaged surface cells. By removing the outermost layers of skin in a controlled way, peels stimulate the production of new, healthier cells and encourage the skin to resurface.
Different types of acids work in different ways:
- Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) — Water-soluble acids including lactic, glycolic, and mandelic. These work on the surface of the skin, breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells and improving texture, tone, and hydration.
- Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) — Oil-soluble acids, primarily salicylic acid. BHAs penetrate into the follicle itself, making them particularly effective for oily and acne-prone skin.
- Enzyme peels — Derived from botanical sources like papaya (papain) or pineapple (bromelain), enzyme treatments digest dead skin cells without acid. They are the gentlest option and suitable for very sensitive skin.
Types of Peels: Superficial, Medium, and Deep
- Superficial peels work on the very outer layer of the skin (epidermis). They require no downtime and can be performed regularly. Most of the peels we use at Le Beauty fall into this category — delivering real results without requiring time off.
- Medium-depth peels penetrate further and typically involve several days of visible shedding. Used for more significant concerns like deeper pigmentation and moderate sun damage.
- Deep peels reach the dermal layer and require significant downtime and medical oversight. We do not perform deep peels at Le Beauty.
Chemical Peels at Le Beauty & Skincare Brisbane
We use Circadia peels, selected for their clinical efficacy, safety profile, and suitability across skin types. Our most commonly used peels include:
- Mandelic Acid Peel — Mandelic acid has a larger molecular structure than glycolic, meaning it penetrates more slowly with less irritation. An excellent choice for acne-prone skin, pigmentation, and those new to peels.
- Pumpkin Whip Enzyme Treatment — A warming enzyme peel with gentle resurfacing action. Suitable for clients who are not candidates for acid peels.
- Berry Mimosa Brightening Peel — A brightening enzyme and acid blend targeting dullness and early pigmentation. Ideal for a refreshed, radiant result.
- Glyco-Guard AHA Peel — A glycolic acid-based treatment for clients with resilient skin looking for accelerated resurfacing and texture improvement.
What Does a Chemical Peel Feel Like?
This varies depending on the peel and your skin's tolerance. Most clients experience mild tingling or warmth during application. Some peels may produce a brief stinging sensation that subsides within a minute or two.
The treatment is performed in a controlled clinical environment. We neutralise or remove the peel at the appropriate time and apply calming, barrier-supportive products afterwards.
In terms of visible peeling: most of our superficial peels produce minimal to no visible flaking. You may notice clearer, smoother skin in the days following treatment, but dramatic visible shedding is not a feature of the peels we routinely use.
Pre and Post Peel Care
Before your peel:
- Avoid waxing, laser, and IPL in the treatment area for at least two weeks
- Discontinue prescription retinoids for 5–7 days prior
- Avoid exfoliating products for 3–5 days prior
- Arrive with clean skin, no makeup
After your peel:
- Apply mineral SPF 50+ every morning — this is the most critical aftercare step
- Avoid heat (saunas, hot yoga, vigorous exercise) for 48 hours
- Do not pick or peel any flaking skin
- Keep the skin hydrated with prescribed homecare
- Avoid active ingredients until the skin has fully settled
How Many Peels Do You Need?
A single peel produces a visible result, but for meaningful improvement in pigmentation, acne scarring, or texture, a series is recommended. Most clients benefit from 3–6 peels spaced 3–4 weeks apart.
After completing a series, maintenance peels every 4–8 weeks preserve results. Many Brisbane clients begin a peel series in autumn, when UV intensity decreases.
